I’ve been playing with Raspberry Pi projects for a few years now. Some of them turned out so useful that I use them every week. Others are still on my to-do list because they sound really practical for daily life, so i decided to provide and share a list.
Here’s a mix of what I’ve already built and what I’m planning to try next. I tried to focus on projects that actually help with real things, saving time, saving money, or making the house feel nicer.
1. Home Automation Hub with Home Assistant
It runs on a Raspberry Pi and controls my lights, plugs, and sensors. I set up simple routines like turning on the lights and coffee maker in the morning. Everything stays local and private. This one became one of the most useful things in my house.
2. Private Media Server (Jellyfin)
I use it to stream my own movies and shows to any TV or phone at home. No subscriptions, no ads, and my data doesn’t leave the house. It’s like having Netflix that I actually own.
3. Energy Monitoring System
I connected a current sensor to the Pi so I can see how much power each device is using. It helped me find devices that were wasting electricity and lower my bills a bit.
4. Local File Backup Server
All my photos, documents, and important files get backed up automatically to a hard drive connected to the Pi. It’s always on and uses almost no electricity.
5. Personal Cloud with Nextcloud
I use it to sync files and photos between my phone, laptop, and tablet. It works like Google Drive but everything stays on my own hardware.
6. Home Dashboard
I have a simple screen in the living room that shows energy usage, room temperatures, and server statistics all in one place. It’s nice to see everything at a glance without opening different apps.
7. Smart Lighting Control
Lights automatically adjust based on the time of day and how bright it is outside. It makes the house feel more comfortable, especially in the evenings.
8. DIY postbox sensor
Set up a motion detection that records locally and sends the alerts. It’s cheaper than most commercial systems.
9. Music Streaming Server
I want to run my own music server so I can play my music collection on any speaker in the house without using Spotify or Apple Music.
10. Smart Thermostat Controller
I’d like to connect the Pi to my heating system so it can adjust the temperature based on whether anyone is home or what the weather forecast says. Could help save on energy bills.
11. Air Quality Monitor
Add the sensors that track temperature, humidity, and air quality inside the home. This would be especially useful during allergy season or when the air outside is bad.
12. Automatic Garden Watering
I have a balcony and I’d like the Pi to water the plants only when the soil is dry. It would save water and I wouldn’t have to remember to do it every day.
13. Network Monitoring Tool
To see which devices are using the most internet and spot any problems early. It would help me understand what’s actually happening on my home network.
14. Retro Gaming Console
This one is more for fun so I can play old games from my childhood on the TV. It seems like a nice weekend project.
15. Custom Automation Scripts
I wrote a few simple scripts that do small things automatically (like turning on a light when I come home). I want to do more of this because it’s surprisingly satisfying.
16. IoT Gateway for Different Smart Devices
I have some smart plugs and sensors from different brands that don’t work together well. A Pi with a Zigbee stick could act as a bridge so they can all talk to each other.
17. Personal Weather Station
I’d like to track the real temperature and humidity right outside my house instead of relying on weather apps that are often wrong for my area.
18. Smart Lock Integration
I want to connect my door lock to my existing automation system so I can unlock it with my phone or set temporary access for guests.
19. 3D Printer Controller
If I get a 3D printer one day, I’d like to run it from a Raspberry Pi so I can start prints from my phone and monitor them with a camera.
20. Smart Irrigation + Weather Station Combo
Combining the garden watering system with weather data sounds really useful. The Pi could decide whether to water based on rain forecast and soil moisture at the same time.
Why I Keep Coming Back to Raspberry Pi Projects
Some of these projects became part of my daily life without me even noticing. Others are still ideas because I haven’t had time yet. What I like most is that you can start small and cheap, and only build what actually helps you.
I don’t try to do everything at once. I usually pick one thing that solves a real annoyance and build that first.
What’s Next for Me?
Right now I’m thinking about improving my energy monitoring and adding the air quality sensors. After that, the garden watering system is high on my list.
If you’re thinking about starting with Raspberry Pi, I’d say pick something that fixes a small problem you have right now. The projects that become most useful are usually the ones that solve something annoying in your daily routine.
Have you built anything with a Raspberry Pi yet? Or is there something on this list you’re thinking about trying?
